Gophers’ loss to Purdue joins growing list of stinging defeats Gophers football general manager Gerrit Chernoff stood at the southwest gate of Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturday with a sense of urgency. After Minnesota players had grabbed their red-boxed dinners postgame and headed to the coach busses, staffers were quickly packing the tail ends of the gear for the trip home to Minneapolis. With Chernoff saying and gesturing “let’s go,” everyone with the Gophers was trying to get out of Dodge, err, West Lafayette, Ind., as soon as possible after a shocking 49-30 loss to Purdue. The problem: Despite how quickly the Gophers left Purdue on Saturday night, the loss to the Boilermakers will linger much longer.Minnesota has effectively squandered yet another chance to win the Big Ten West division this season, and unlike falling short in previous years, Minnesota will likely do so by multiple games this fall. The Gophers (5-5, 3-4 Big Ten) also added another category of loss to their expanding catalog: getting blown out by an opponent which spent most of the s...

Keeler: Deion Sanders, CU Buffs might not win another football game. Coach Prime was still perfect hire. BOULDER — Kenny Smith pulled a smartphone out of his pocket and scrolled for a miracle.“My daughter, who doesn’t follow college football, if you asked her, who did Denver play for the (NBA Finals) championship?” She might not know it was Miami,” the venerated basketball analyst and “Inside The NBA” stalwart told me last month as he searched for said daughter’s contact info.“But she called me last week and was like, ‘Man, I can’t believe Colorado was up 29-0 (against Stanford) and lost.’ Deion (Sanders) has a magnetism and gravity that I haven’t seen. … I have not seen it happen (like this). And for college sports and for college football, I think it’s the best thing that’s ever happened.”Coach Prime’s Buffs (4-6, 1-6 Pac-12) probably won’t win another tilt this season. The game management lacks. Handing your offensive play-calling to Pat Shurmur is the kind of Hail Mary ...

Despite injuries to Bills defense, Broncos will have their hands full against Buffalo rush: “These guys are really good” The Bills defense in 2023 has faced a torrent of injuries.Von Miller missed the beginning of the season. Defensive lineman DaQuan Jones is on injured reserve currently. Inside linebacker Matt Milano was lost for the year. So, too, was top cornerback Tre’Davious White.Through all of that, though, Buffalo’s defense has retained the ability to impact opposing quarterbacks. The Bills enter Monday night’s game against Denver sixth in the NFL in sack rate (8.3%) and seventh in total pressure rate (26.7%), and they’ve done it thanks to a seemingly endless supply of rushers.Miller is still working back into form through five games after a torn ACL ended his 2022 season; he has yet to record a sack after totaling eight last year. But the Bills also roll out Leonard Floyd (seven sacks), A.J. Epenesa (five), Greg Rousseau (three), Shaq Lawson (1.5) and others off the edge. On the inside, Ed Oliver is tied for second on the team with five sacks.“You try not to spook yourself out by watching too ...

Truly magical carpets: Azerbaijani tradition on show in Brussels It’s an ancient craft that’s still in demand in the modern world. Azerbaijan’s carpet weavers create traditional designs with a contemporary touch. Some of the finest examples are currently on show at the Foundation Frison Horta in Brussels, writes Nick Powell.Azerbaijan’s Ambassador, Vaqif Sadiqov, said it was a particular pleasure to see such an important part of his country’s cultural heritage on display in a building designed by Victor Horta, one of the founders of the art nouveau movement. The Foundation’s director-general, Nupur Tron, said it was all the more important to develop cultural contact when the world is so divided and to involve the next generation in carrying it forward. The carpets on display are part of living history that is still evolving. “The tradition shall go always with innovations”, explained Emin Mammadov, from Azerkhalcha, the carpet-weaving enterprise which organised the exhibition. Its mission is to make sure that the folk art does not simply become hi...

Sharks’ Rusanowsky talks Hall of Fame journey and unexpected aftereffects of his near-fatal accident In many respects, Dan Rusanowsky is the first San Jose Shark to have a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.Of course, several players who have worn the Sharks uniform are in the Hall, with former San Jose goalie Mike Vernon among the Class of 2023. Former Sharks general manager and captain Doug Wilson was inducted two years ago.But those ex-Sharks players were largely voted in because of their accomplishments with other teams. Rusanowsky has been the Sharks’ radio play-by-play voice since he and Dennis Hull broadcasted the franchise’s first game in Vancouver against the Canucks on Oct. 4, 1991.Now, close to 2,500 games later, he’s receiving hockey broadcasting’s highest honor, the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award, given in recognition of members of the radio and television industry who made outstanding contributions to their profession and the game during their careers. Award winners are selected by the NHL Broadcasters’ Association.“I’m representing the San Jose Shar...
