By Patrick Whittle | Associated PressPORTLAND, Maine — Debris from the lost submersible Titan has been returned to land after a fatal implosion during its voyage to the wreck of the Titanic captured the world’s attention last week. The return of the debris to port in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, is a key piece of the investigation into why the submersible imploded, killing all five people on board. Twisted chunks of the 22-foot submersible were unloaded at a Canadian Coast Guard pier on Wednesday.Horizon Arctic, a Canadian ship, carried a remotely operated vehicle, or ROV, to search the ocean floor near the Titanic wreck for pieces of the submersible. Pelagic Research Services, a company with offices in Massachusetts and New York that owns the ROV, said on Wednesday that it has completed offshore operations.Pelagic Research Services’ team is “still on mission” and cannot comment on the ongoing Titan investigation, which involves several governm...

Ukraine accuses local man of directing deadly Russia attack

By Hanna Arhirova | Associated PressKYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian authorities on Wednesday arrested a man they accused of helping Russia direct a missile strike that killed at least 11 people, including three teenagers, at a popular pizza restaurant in eastern Ukraine. The Tuesday evening attack on Kramatorsk wounded 61 other people, Ukraine’s National Police said. It was the latest bombardment of a Ukrainian city, a tactic Russia has used heavily in the 16-month-old war.The strike, and others across Ukraine late Tuesday and early Wednesday, indicated that the Kremlin is not easing its aerial onslaught, despite political and military turmoil at home after a short-lived armed uprising in Russia last weekend. There has been no apparent military push by Ukraine to exploit that turmoil, though the government has been tight-lipped about recent battlefield developments as it seeks to gain momentum in its recently launched counteroffensive. The Kremlin reeled from the weekend mutiny led by ...

Why airline delays and cancellations are so bad: It’s not just the weather

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:38:42 GMT

By Chris Isidore and Caroll Alvarado | CNNNew York  — Hundreds of thousands of US airline customers were stranded this week as severe weather grounded planes and led to canceled flights. But storms were only one factor behind the travel nightmare. Staffing shortages, at both US airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic control operations, took a bad situation and made it worse. The situation at US airports was only slightly better Wednesday. As of noon ET, FlightAware tracking service reported there were nearly 800 flights canceled and another 1,400 delays. Storms in the Boston area caused a groundstop there early Wednesday, keeping planes destined for Logan Airport at the gate or parked on the tarmac at airports around the country.Although that’s better than the 2,200 canceled flights in each of the last two days, or the more than 16,000 delayed flights between Monday and Tuesday, it’s hardly a smooth-running operation.Staffing shortageThe US air travel system i...

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco's plan to provide long-term housing for young adults experiencing homelessness at 1174 Folsom Street is facing backlash from some SoMa residents. In May, Mayor London Breed announced a proposal for the city to purchase a 42-unit building at 1174 Folsom Street for use as supportive housing for young adults. The building would provide "long-term affordable housing with onsite social services to help young adult tenants access and maintain housing stability," the Mayor's Office wrote.Shireen McSpadden, the city's Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing director, said, "Creating this home in the SoMa community will be transformational for the 42 youth who will reside at 1174 Folsom Street. We are excited to provide these young people with dignified housing and a safe and nurturing environment in which to thrive."The violent death of Banko Brown in April placed a spotlight on homeless young adults who are struggling in San Francisco. Rain has failed to quell Canadian wildfires, and more smoky haze is on the way, officials say

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:38:42 GMT

TORONTO (AP) — Canadian wildfires will send worsening smoky air across the country and neighboring United States in coming days after recent heavy rains failed to fall in areas of Quebec where the fires are most active, officials said Wednesday.Drifting smoke from the wildfires has lowered curtains of haze on broad swaths of Canada and the United States, pushing into southern Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, and moving into parts of West Virginia. Canadian officials say it is the nation’s worst wildfire season ever and they expect air quality to remain a concern through the summer, as long as the fires continue. It started early on drier-than-usual ground and accelerated very quickly, exhausting firefighting resources across the country, fire and environmental officials said.Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Steven Flisfeder said smoke will migrate across Quebec and Ontario over the next few days, and that air quality will deteriorate as a result.“As long as the fires a...

"This impressive increase of 64% marked the largest annual rise in two decades. Over the past two years, sales have decreased slightly from their record-breaking levels. This downward trend indicates a return to the typical sales figures seen in the years prior to 2020."
