Regina Spektor’s Summer in the City

Regina Spektor’s Summer in the City Regina Spektor’s Summer in the City: In the broadest sense, both Regina Spektor and Aimee Mann are often described as singer/songwriters. Those words, when put together, are usually considered a genre but they’re not really. There are a lot of singers who write songs but aren’t considered singer/songwriters. It’s all a bit of a nonsense. That said, both Mann and Spektor are fabulous. And they put on very different shows. Mann has a full band, and in general she keeps the between-song banter to a minimum. Spektor is on the stage alone, switching between the piano, keyboard, and, at a couple of points, nothing but the mike stand. It’s the differences that make both sets wonderful.Aimee Mann‘s debut solo album, Whatever, was released 30 years ago, in 1993. For a decade before that of course, she fronted Boston new wave band ‘Til Tuesday, scoring a hit with “Voices Carry.” There’s none of that for Mann nowadays, and there’...

AP top-25 rankings: My ballot, the preseason poll and solid Pac-12 representation The Pac-12 placed five teams in the AP preseason poll on Monday, equalling the Big Ten’s total and falling one short of matching the SEC’s contingent. In advance of the most anticipated Pac-12 season in a decade — and the final year in the conference for eight schools — two teams cracked the AP top 10: USC will start the season in the No. 6 position, with Washington slotted No. 10.Three more are ranked in the teens: No. 14 Utah, No. 15 Oregon and No. 18 Oregon State.UCLA was in the ‘others receiving votes’ category. The Pac-12 placed five teams in the AP preseason poll as recently as 2021, when a calamitous non-conference performance resulted in scant poll representation throughout the fall. The ballot below was submitted to the Associated Press late last month. ‘Publicity stunt!’: Oprah Winfrey slammed for trying to bring CBS crew into Maui evacuation center People on social media have accused Oprah Winfrey of being “really gross” and trying to stage a “photo op” after she unsuccessfully sought to get a CBS film crew into a Maui evacuation center Sunday where she presumably hoped to be filmed talking to survivors of the deadly wildfires that swept though Lahaina last week. The media mogul, who owns some 1,000 acres on Maui and reportedly lives on the island part-time, may have been hoping for a repeat on-camera opportunity from last week. On Thursday she was filmed by a BBC crew at the War Memorial Complex in Wailuku, which is being used as a shelter for evacuees, the New York Times reported. She was seen distributing “basic necessities,” including towels, water and personal hygiene products to evacuees.Winfrey tried to return to the shelter on Sunday with her own camera crew from CBS. Initial reports Sunday said both she and the crew were denied entry because media were restricted, the Honolulu Star-A...

James Bond, make room for the Oppenheimer Martini

James Bond, make room for the Oppenheimer Martini J. Robert Oppenheimer wasn’t just a renowned physicist. He was a fine party host who often held gatherings at his Los Alamos, New Mexico, home for his colleagues, as moviegoers are learning at “Oppenheimer” screenings. And though the scientists’ atomic-bomb mission was dubbed the Manhattan Project, his drink of choice was the martini.Cocktail lovers who paid close attention during a party scene may have noticed Oppenheimer (as played by actor Cillian Murphy) mixing one for a guest. He takes a glass and dips the rim … Wait, what is that? Salt? Sugar? This hard-charging, chain-smoking scientist isn’t making a Lemon Drop, is he?Turns out he had his own concoction — a strong one. The Oppenheimer Martini is gin with just a splash of dry vermouth, with a rim that’s been dipped in a mixture of honey and lime juice. The Lexington House version of the Oppenheimer Martini, with the honey-lime mixture for the rim.
