Explained: Europe’s new data law

Industrial manufacturers in Europe sense the opportunity of big data — but Brussels is about to change the rules on how to tap into it.European Union legislators struck a deal Tuesday evening on a landmark bill that aims to regulate who can access and share data generated by connected machines and devices, both on the work floor and at home. The new law is a response to the untapped potential of industrial data in Europe, as 80 percent of machine or device-generated data is never used. The slow pace of its data economy is a threat to Europe’s industrial base — where the Continent still holds considerable sway — and data will be key for the deployment of artificial intelligence technologies in coming years. The EU’s Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton warned last week that underusing industrial data is “holding back its huge potential for growth and innovation.”Still, Europe’s effort to regulate itself into a thriving industrial data economy has gained little attention. Hundreds of people came together at Sacred Heart and Our Lady Help of Christians in Newton on Tuesday night for a Mass of Peace in honor of the three elderly parishioners who were brutally killed over the weekend. The hour-long private service was to remember Jill and Bruno D’Amore and Lucia Arpino, the mother of Jill D’Amore, who were found dead in a home on Broadway early Sunday morning when the D’Amores did not arrive at church to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends.Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced an arrest in the case on Monday evening, identifying 41-year-old Christopher Ferguson as the man who authorities said allegedly attacked Jill, Bruno and Lucia.Mild, Muggy Midweek
Published Thu, 14 Nov 2024 21:56:37 GMT
Do we sound like a broken record yet? Today will be another mild and muggy day with scattered showers and thunderstorms on and off through the day. We’re already tracking those showers and storms this morning and they’ll be with us all day today, but on and off. It’s not going to rain every hour of the day. It’ll stay mild and muggy with dew points nearing the tropical level and temperatures in the upper 70s. The line of showers and storms that will come through this evening is actually along a cold front, but it’s not really going to act like a cold front. Temperatures will stay where they are, if not even go up a bit heading into the weekend. Temperatures will go up a bit only because we’ll add sunshine to the mix — something we’ve been lacking this week and that was holding temperatures down. What the bigger impacts will be is that cold front will bring in **SLIGHTLY** drier air. This isn’t going to be that magic cold front that...Commonwealth Rugby Conference All-Stars

With roughly two weeks to go in the first half, the Yankees are in an odd position. With a 43-35, third-place record entering Tuesday’s series-opener in Oakland, they’re certainly not where they want to be. But things could also be a lot worse given all the injuries the team has endured. The Yankees — especially Brian Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner — are banking on the idea that better health and better days are ahead. However, injuries aren’t the only reason the Yankees haven’t lived up to expectations so far. With that in mind, here are a few things the team can accomplish before the All-Star break begins on July 10.WAKE UP THE BATSThe Yankees had been scuffling at the plate for a stretch the last time they played the A’s. Then they faced Oakland’s staff and erupted for 28 runs over a three-game sweep from May 8-10.Once again, the Bombers could use a dose of green and gold pitching.Entering Tuesday, the Yankees were hitting just .197 with...Howie Carr: Time to cut the cord for good

I finally cut the cord last week.I understand that I’m late to the get-rid-of-cable-TV party, but better late than never. It’s nice to save about $100 a month, but even more satisfying is knowing where my money won’t be going any longer. To Disney, NBC, Warner and Fox, among so many other woke corporations drunk on DEI, ESG, CRT and Pride. The problem is, if you give them money, it only encourages them. If the greed-crazed Murdochs and Robertses get used to grabbing all this money automatically from millions of us every month, no matter how outrageously they insult and belittle us, they’re never going to change.I had Comcast cable. I still get Internet from them. But going down to the Dedham office and saying “I’m outta here!” was a good start.Comcast owns NBC, so I was subsidizing MSNBC and all of Joe Biden’s amen chorus. I could list some of them, but it’s too depressing to even type their names.I never watched MSNBC, or CNBC or any of their other wretched channels, but I was paying...OBF: With Red Sox struggling, John Henry happy to talk … about golf

The Red Sox are on the clock.Tick. Tick. Bust.100 days from today, they’ll be swinging wooden bats in the playoffs or 3-woods from the first tee.Perhaps a few players can be part of the new Fenway Sports Group team in Tiger and Rory’s indoor quasi-virtual TGL golf venture. A press release/news story announcing the deal first appeared in the Pizzuti-Henry Post on Monday.John Henry and Tom Werner heralded “Boston’s” entry in the new golf entity. It plays on 15 consecutive Monday nights after the Super Bowl, will utilize a venue in West Palm Beach, Fla., and is linked with the PGA Tour.Werner appeared on CNBC to hype TGL.The league will feature “the best golfers in the world,” Werner said. That means LIV and let live.No word if John and Tom will be hanging with the Saudi Crown Prince and Jay Monahan in the virtual owner’s box. Thank goodness they won’t have to worry about getting through airport security with that crowd. We wouldn’t want to profile anyone. Especially the folks who broug...Is it a ‘richcession’? Or a ‘rolling recession”? Or maybe no recession at all?
Published Thu, 14 Nov 2024 21:56:37 GMT
WASHINGTON (AP) — The warnings have been sounded for more than a year: A recession is going to hit the United States. If not this quarter, then by next quarter. Or the quarter after that. Or maybe next year.So is a recession still in sight? The latest signs suggest maybe not. Despite much higher borrowing costs, thanks to the Federal Reserve’s aggressive streak of interest rate hikes, consumers keep spending, and employers keep hiring. Gas prices have dropped, and grocery prices have leveled off, giving Americans more spending power. The economy keeps managing to grow. And so does the belief among some economists that the United States might actually achieve an elusive “soft landing,” in which growth slows but households and businesses spend enough to avoid a full-blown recession. “The U.S. economy is genuinely displaying signs of resilience,” said Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY, a tax and consulting firm. “This is leading many to rightly question whether the long-forecast recess...SIU investigating police interaction involving man with gun in Burlington
