The first test of the Chicago Cubs starting pitching depth has arrived.Jameson Taillon, who was scheduled to start Thursday at Wrigley Field, was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain. The move was retroactive to Monday, and the Cubs believe the right-hander will be ready to return soon after he is eligible. The Cubs called up Javier Assad from Triple-A Iowa to take Taillon’s place in the rotation, and Assad started Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.“Last year we didn’t have enough depth to withstand that,” team President Jed Hoyer said of Taillon’s injury. “Hopefully this year we have guys like Javy, and hopefully Kyle (Hendricks) comes back soon. It can never be an excuse. You have to have guys ready to fill those spots.”Taillon signed a four-year, $68 million deal over the winter and is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts. He threw five shutout innings Saturday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.Manager David Ro...Latest Bears stadium legislation would add $3 to ticket prices at Arlington Heights site to help pay off Soldier Field debt

Tickets to games and other events at the Chicago Bears’ proposed Arlington Heights development would come with a $3-per-person tax under legislation filed in the Illinois House on Thursday that seeks to jump-start stalled talks over state assistance for the team’s anticipated decampment to the northwest suburbs.Proceeds from the $3 admission tax would go to the city of Chicago to help pay off debt the Park District incurred to fund renovations of Soldier Field two decades ago.Initial reaction to the proposal was tepid from the suburbs, city legislators and the Bears. But the bill’s chief sponsor said the move was an effort to keep alive conversations about the future of a Bears stadium with the scheduled end of the spring legislative session less than a month away.State Rep. Marty Moylan, a Des Plaines Democrat who previously was the northwest suburb’s mayor, said one of the goals of the bill was to gain support from Chicago lawmakers who are reluctant to bac...Lincoln-Sudbury, Hingham advance to meet in Coaches Cup final

BRIDGEWATER — Ever since a few longtime officials came up with the idea to create the showcase about 13 years ago, the Coaches Cup has consistently delivered some of the best lacrosse action in the Commonwealth, if not New England. On Thursday, the tournament resumed, and it now appears a few familiar schools will vie for the championship this upcoming weekend following its events.Senior captain Ryan Berkel finished with a hat trick to go with three assists, while classmate Van Tanguay added a trio of goals, as Lincoln-Sudbury clinched its second straight trip to the Coaches Cup title game with a convincing 12-6 victory over Wellesley at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School.Wellesley (4-1) entered the semifinals with a perfect record, looking to make a statement against a perennial heavyweight. For much of the first half, it appeared as though Lincoln-Sudbury (5-1) was going to be in a dogfight with the upstart Bay State Conference squad. Then, as they have so often done in the pa...Deep O’Bryant boys volleyball team sweeps by Lincoln-Sudbury

ROXBURY — If there are two things that are most consistent with the O’Bryant boys volleyball team early on this season, it’s the Tigers’ strong play when closing out a set; and that senior setter Son Nguyen will get the right characters going for the team’s best chance at winning. Both showed in full form Thursday afternoon, as Nguyen dished out 28 assists to help No. 5 O’Bryant (7-1) overcome a resilient No. 20 Lincoln-Sudbury team for a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-17) nonleague win. Not one player accrued double-digit kills, as Nguyen spread the wealth beyond typical premier hitter Jonathan Narsjo, who couldn’t get going until the final set against the Warriors’ blockers. That distribution coupled nicely with the group’s 11 aces, which it used for the final point in two separate sets to hold off some vicious Lincoln-Sudbury rallies.“That, I really love about our boys. Closing plays, we are winning,” said O’Bryant head coach Paul Pitts-Dilley. “When we are playing our game, we’re playing g...Barricaded carjacking suspect prompts freeway closure in Carlsbad

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A state lawmaker in Tennessee resigned suddenly for an ethics violation that became public Thursday, two weeks after he joined fellow Republicans in expelling two Black Democratic legislators for protesting in support of gun control on the state House floor.Rep. Scotty Campbell, vice chair of the House Republican Caucus, violated the Legislature’s workplace discrimination and harassment policy. The brief Ethics Subcommittee findings document from late March did not provide specifics and said no more information would be released.Campbell’s resignation came hours after a Nashville TV station confronted him about sexual harassment allegations involving legislative interns.Campbell declined to provide a detailed account of what happened. Asked by WTVF-TV on Thursday about the ethics panel’s decision, Campbell said, “I had consensual, adult conversations with two adults off property.”“If I choose to talk to any intern in the future, it will be recorded,” Ca...Transgender lawmaker silenced by Montana House speaker

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana’s House speaker on Thursday refused to allow a transgender lawmaker to speak about bills on the House floor until she apologizes for saying lawmakers would have “blood on their hands” if they supported a bill to ban gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth, the lawmaker said.Rep. Zooey Zephyr, who was deliberately misgendered by a conservative group of lawmakers demanding her censure after Tuesday’s comments, said she will not apologize, creating a standoff between the first-term state lawmaker and Republican legislative leaders.Speaker Matt Regier refused to acknowledge Zephyr on Thursday when she wanted to comment on a bill seeking to put a binary definition of male and female into state code.“It is up to me to maintain decorum here on the House floor, to protect the dignity and integrity,” Regier said Thursday. “And any representative that I don’t feel can do that will not be recognized.”Regier said the decision came after “mult...California to meet 100% of water requests thanks to storms

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will provide 100% of the water requested by cities and farms for the first time in years thanks to winter storms that filled reservoirs and runoff from a record snowpack, regulators announced Thursday. The State Water Project will provide full allocations to 29 water agencies supplying about 27 million customers and 750,000 acres of farmland, the Department of Water Resources said.As late as March, the agency was only expecting to provide 75% of requested water supplies. The last time the state agency fully met water requests was in 2006. Meanwhile, the federal Bureau of Reclamation announced it was increasing water allocations for the Central Valley Project to 100% for the first time since 2017.The move was cheered by contractors who supply the federal water to the state’s agricultural heartland. It will provide much-needed water to communities, farms and families in the San Joaquin Valley, said a statement from Jose Gutierrez, interim gener...Latest news
