OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Union Pacific hired the CEO Wednesday that a hedge fund pressuring the railroad to improve recommended earlier this year, and it cut its outlook after reporting disappointing results driven by weakening consumer demand. The Soroban Capital Partners hedge fund that holds a $1.6 billion stake in Union Pacific had been urging the railroad to hire Vena because of his expertise in streamlining operations. The hedge fund said that UP lagged behind its peers during Lance Fritz’ tenure in all key measures over the past 8 years. Soroban declined to comment on the hiring news Wednesday morning, but investors resoundingly endorsed it by sending Union Pacific’s stock soaring more than 9% to $235.54 in early trading.“I am excited about returning to Union Pacific and look forward to the journey to be the safest, most reliable and most efficient railro...Pedestrians scatter as fire causes New York construction crane’s arm to collapse and crash to street

Ground beef contaminated with salmonella has sickened at least 16 people, including six hospitalized, in four Northeastern states, federal health officials said Tuesday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said illnesses have been reported in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Ground beef is the only common food reported in the outbreak. People who recalled what they ate and where they bought it reported eating 80% lean ground beef purchased from ShopRite stores in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York. No recall has been issued, and an investigation is continuing, the agency said. The true number of people sickened is likely much higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to states with known illnesses. Many people who become ill recover without medical care and are not tested for salmonella poisoning. LONDON (AP) — A London jury acquitted Kevin Spacey on sexual assault charges on Wednesday after a four-week trial in which the actor said he was a “big flirt” who had consensual flings with men and whose only misstep was touching a man’s groin while making a “clumsy pass.”Three men accused the Oscar winner of aggressively grabbing their crotches. A fourth, an aspiring actor seeking mentorship, said he awoke to the actor performing oral sex on him after going to Spacey’s London apartment for a beer and either falling asleep or passing out.All the men said the contact was unwanted but Spacey testified that the young actor and another man had willingly participated in consensual acts. He said a third man’s allegation that he grabbed his privates like a striking “cobra” backstage at a theater was “pure fantasy.”He said he didn’t remember a fourth incident at a small party at a home he rented in the country but accepted that he touched the groin of a man he had met at a pub during ...FHP trooper stops wrong-way driver heading towards busy Orlando intersection

The Moldovan government will kick out 45 Russian diplomats over the next month.Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu announced Wednesday that he will cut the number of Russian envoys in the Moldovan capital of Chișinău so that there are “fewer individuals acting to destabilize the situation in our country,” reported local news outlets.“This decision comes as a result of numerous unfriendly actions toward the Republic of Moldova, unrelated to diplomatic duties, as well as attempts to destabilize the internal situation in our country,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement. The decision comes shortly after an investigation by The Insider and Moldovan television channel Jurnal TV earlier this week noted that the number of satellite dishes and communication devices on top of the Russian embassy in Chișinău has been growing.
