COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley was asked at a New Hampshire town hall about the reason for the Civil War, and she didn’t mention slavery in her response. She walked back her comments hours later.Asked during Wednesday night’s town hall in Berlin what she believed had caused the war — the first shots of which were fired in her home state of South Carolina — Haley talked about the role of government, replying that it involved “the freedoms of what people could and couldn’t do.”She then turned the question back to the man who had asked it. He replied that he was not the one running for president and wished instead to know her answer. After Haley went into a lengthier explanation about the role of government, individual freedom and capitalism, the questioner seemed to admonish Haley, saying, “In the year 2023, it’s astonishing to me that you answer that question without mentioning the word ‘slavery.’”“What do you want me to say about slavery?” H...Thomas Castellanos’ 2 fourth-quarter TDs lift BC over No. 17 SMU in Fenway Bowl

He stopped and posed briefly in the back of the end zone directly in front of Boston’s bullpen, where...Bruins get a little boost at practice

Jim Montgomery has given some tough reviews of practices this season. When he hasn’t liked the energy of the sessions, the Bruins’ coach hasn’t been shy about letting people know about it.That wasn’t the case on Thursday. The fact that the B’s snapped their four-game losing streak on Wednesday in Buffalo might have had a little something to do with it. A bigger reason might have been that a Christmas vacation week crowd of families packed Warrior Ice Arena for the 40-minute practice, oohing-and-ahhing with every deke, every snipe, every cherry-picking save they saw.The Bruins have reached the pinnacle of their hockey playing profession, but having a few extra eyeballs on you never fails to motivate players, at any level.“That’s our best practice in a long time,” said Montgomery. “I thought the energy of our fans being there and with the guys wanting to put on a show or whatever it was, we practiced with really good pace and intensity today.”Weymout...Recipe: Make this Shallot and Bacon Tart to enjoy while watching New Year’s Day TV

A savory tart could be a perfect treat for TV watching on New Year’s Day. This Caramelized Shallot and Bacon Tart is one of my favorites. The sweetness of browned onions and shallots team beautifully with crisp bacon and creamy ricotta. For a shortcut, use a prepared pie dough from the refrigerated dairy case at the supermarket. Often, I use Pillsbury Pie Crust, but Trader Joe’s prepared pie dough is a good choice too.Caramelized Shallot and Bacon TartYield: 8 servingsINGREDIENTS1 round prepared pie dough, such as refrigerated Pillsbury Pie Crust4 slices thick bacon1 tablespoon canola oil4 shallots, cut crosswise into thin slices1 1/2 large yellow onions, cut in half top to bottom, thinly sliced crosswise1/8 teaspoon sugar1 1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme leavesSalt and freshly ground black pepper to taste1 cup whole-milk ricotta cheese1 egg yolk1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheeseEgg wash: 1 egg yolk beaten with 1/2 teaspoon waterDIRECTIONS1. In my childhood, New Year’s Day meant a lunch that showcased black-eyed peas. The annual event was based on my father’s belief that the consumption of those pale-colored legumes, each with a prominent black spot, were the source of good luck in the new year.Often my dad made a simple soup that also featured those tasty peas. But more often, they were shown off in Hoppin’ John, a delicious concoction made with a mix of bacon and boneless ham, as well as white long-grained rice, herbs, and yes, black-eyed peas. It’s a slow-cooked wonder, and some may question my featuring it in a quick-cook column. But we all could use a potential good fortune charm.Wishing you good luck in 2024.Hoppin’ JohnYield: 8 servingsINGREDIENTS6 slices bacon, chopped1 (1- to 1 1/2 pound) boneless ham, cut into 3/4-inch planks1 onion, finely chopped2 celery stalks, minced4 garlic cloves, minced1/2 teaspoon dried thyme4 cups chicken broth2 pounds frozen black-eyes peas; see cook’s notes2 bay leaves1 1/2 cups lon...Latest news
