HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Bill Flower realized 30 years ago that cricket wouldn’t survive, let alone bloom, in Zimbabwe unless it reached out to the country’s Black majority and found a place in their hearts.Part of his plan finally came together two weeks ago when Takashinga Cricket Club, set in one of the country’s oldest Black townships, hosted an international game for the first time. The spiritual home of Black cricket in Zimbabwe, where players looked after the pitch and planted the grass themselves in its early days, finally became a fully fledged international venue when West Indies beat the United States in a Cricket World Cup qualifying game on June 18.It was a landmark match in which Takashinga lived up to its name, which means “We persevered” in the local Shona language.“It’s absolutely fantastic and I know that my father would be very proud to witness it, and I’m certainly proud,” said Bill Flower’s son, Andy, the former Zimbabwe captain and Ashes-w...Angel City and Gotham FC play to scoreless draw

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) — Goalkeeper DiDi Haracic made three saves for Angel City in a 0-0 draw with Gotham FC in the lone match Sunday in the National Women’s Soccer League. Haracic stopped a pair of shots by Gotham’s Delanie Sheehan and Yazmeen Ryan in the space of four minutes in the first half. Angel City (3-6-5) is undefeated in three straight matches, but remains mired in 11th place in the league standings. Gotham (6-4-4) is in fifth. There was a touching moment when Mana Shim subbed into the game in the second half and was greeted with a warm ovation. Shim was one of the players who came forward in 2021 with allegations of misconduct and sexual coercion against former NWSL coach Paul Riley, spurring a pair of investigations that misbehavior was systemic in the league. Riley, who no longer coaches in the league, denied the allegations. Shim had not played in an NWSL game since 2018. Rain or shine, hundreds of people took to the streets of Fort Lauderdale to rally against a series of federal and state decisions that they say restrict their rights. Now they are calling for people to take action and exercise their right to vote. Raindrops weren’t enough to drown out the drumbeat from demonstrators, Sunday afternoon.“Hey, ho, DeSantis gotta go!” they chanted. The “We the People” March in Fort Lauderdale dripped with disdain for many of the laws enacted by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Republican supermajority in the state Legislature.“It’s a coalition of more 50 organizations that are fighting for our basic freedom and democracy,” said Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.Weinstein said more than 1,000 bills taking rights away have been introduced around the country.“These bills are being introduced in 48 states. LOXAHATCHEE GROVES, Fla. (WSVN) — A new Florida law prohibiting bans on certain dog breeds comes as big news for the founder of a South Florida animal shelter. At the center of the new law are pit bulls, animals that those who run rescue facilities in the Sunshine State argue are often misunderstood.Their size and stature, coupled with a checkered breed history as fighting dogs, mean no other kind of canine finds itself at these shelters more than pit bulls. It’s something that Big Dog Ranch Rescue founder Lauree Simmons sees every day in Loxahatchee Groves.“Owner surrenders are up 60%. Forty percent of that is due to breed discrimination, where people are downsizing, renting somewhere smaller or moving into a different community,” she said. But times may be changing.Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill outlawing a ban on pit bulls in Miami-Dade County. It also walks back housing restrictions based on breed or weight.“This was an unnecessary ban that co...Latest news
