NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country’s role as the G20 host this year would focus on highlighting the concerns of the developing world, and has proposed the African Union to become permanent members of the forum.“We have a vision of inclusiveness and with that vision, we have invited the African Union to become permanent members of the G20,” Modi said on Sunday as he addressed the Business 20 Summit in New Delhi. The B20 is an industry event and part of the summit of the 20 leading rich and developing nations, which will be hosted in the Indian capital next month. Over three days, industry and policy leaders from around the world have discussed themes like building resilient supply chains, digital transformation, debt distress facing developing countries and how to advance on climate change goals. Their recommendations will be shared with the G20 governments, organizers said. As host of the G20 this year, India has struggled to bridge the differences ...Ukraine investigates incident that killed 3 pilots while Russia attacks with cruise missiles

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian authorities have launched an investigation after a midair collision between two warplanes in the west of the country killed three pilots. Ukraine’s air force spokesman Yuri Ihnat told Ukrainian television on Sunday it wasn’t immediately clear how long the probe would take. According to the air force’s Telegram page, two L-39 training military aircraft collided on Friday during a combat mission over Ukraine’s western Zhytomyr region. Three pilots were killed, including Andriy Pilshchykov, a well-known pilot with the nickname “Juice” who was an outspoken advocate for Ukraine getting F-16 fighter jets. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his nightly address on Saturday paid tribute to Pilshchykov, describing him as a “Ukrainian officer, one of those who helped our country a lot.” Ukraine’s Vasilkiv tactical aviation brigade on Sunday identified the other two pilots killed in the collision as Viacheslav Minka and Serhiy Prokazin....Global inflation pressures could become harder to manage in coming years, research suggests

JACKSON HOLE, Wyoming (AP) — Rising trade barriers. Aging populations. A broad transition from carbon-spewing fossil fuels to renewable energy. The prevalence of such trends across the world could intensify global inflation pressures in the coming years and make it harder for the Federal Reserve and other central banks to meet their inflation targets. That concern was a theme sounded in several high-profile speeches and economic studies presented Friday and Saturday at the Fed’s annual conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. For decades, the global economy had been moving toward greater integration, with goods flowing more freely between the United States and its trading partners. Lower-wage production overseas allowed Americans to enjoy inexpensive goods and kept inflation low, though at the expense of many U.S. manufacturing jobs. Since the pandemic, though, that trend has shown signs of reversing. Multinational corporations have been shifting their supply chains away...More than 600 firefighters backed by water-dropping aircraft struggle to control wildfires in Greece

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — More than 600 firefighters, including reinforcements from several European countries, backed by a fleet of water-dropping planes and helicopters were battling three persistent major wildfires in Greece Sunday, two of which have been raging for days.A massive blaze in the country’s northeastern regions of Evros and Alexandroupolis, believed to have caused the deaths of 20 people, was burning for a ninth day.The blaze, one of the largest single wildfires ever to have struck a European Union country, has decimated vast tracts of forest and burnt homes in the outlying areas of the city of Alexandroupolis. On Sunday, 295 firefighters, seven planes and five helicopters were tackling it, the fire department said. The wildfire has scorched 77,000 hectares (770 square kilometers) of land and had 120 active hotspots, the European Union’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service said Sunday. Copernicus is the EU space program’s Earth observation component and uses satellite...Arcangelo takes the Travers Stakes for trainer Jena Antonucci

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Trainer Jena Antonucci heard all the skeptics of Arcangelo and how the two-and-half month layoff between starts would effect the 3-year-old thoroughbred in Saturday's 154th running of the Travers Stakes. She elected to tune them out, and let her horse do the talking. And Arcangelo delivered, backing up his win in the Belmont Stakes in June with a decisive victory in Saratoga Race Courses' mid-summer derby."Thanks to the naysayers for motivating me a little bit more; not that we need a little bit more motivation," said Antonucci. "But we will stay focused on what works for this horse."The $1.25 million, grade one race for three-year-olds offered a star-studded seven-horse field - perhaps the deepest pool of talent the race has seen in years. Arcangelo was one of three Triple Crown race winners in the lineup, including Kentucky Derby winner Mage, and Preakness victor National Treasure. But none of those three horses were favorited Saturday. The leader...Horoscopes Aug. 27, 2023: Aaron Paul, fight negativity and see what happens

Dear Amy: I married my husband two years ago. He has two children from a previous marriage, both in their mid-20s. I have a teen still at home.We have a really nice time with his children. We regularly talk/check in with them, and I believe we have a good relationship. However, recently my mother died, after a sudden and torturous battle with cancer. My stepchildren have not expressed their condolences in any way, and both skipped the funeral.I saw them two days later and they did not address it at all.My feelings are very hurt, but I’m not sure they should be.My mother used to say that young adulthood was her least favorite phase of life – people in their 20s are particularly self-involved. So this may just be the behavior of that age group.I haven’t shared my feelings with my husband because I don’t want him to feel bad.I suppose my real worry is that while we all get along, they do not want to be close.I do want to be close. I love them and want to nurture a rela...Censorship Has Never Been Worse at Guantánamo Bay

The rocky cliffs of Cuba split the ocean from the sky as our flight descended toward the tarmac at the Guantánamo Bay Naval Base. It was a clear afternoon in late June, and the first thing we were told before boarding the flight from Joint Base Andrews was not to photograph from the tarmac or plane. It was the start of a week at America’s most notorious military base, where absurd restrictions would dictate what I, and other journalists, could and could not see.One misconception about Guantánamo was cleared up before I ever got off the plane. In my mind, everything was the prison. For so long, I associated this place with concertina wire, guard towers, and orange-clad anonymous detainees. In recent years, I’d reported on some of those same detainees, now liberated, and I learned that my prejudices and fears about the vast majority of these men had been unfounded. They welcomed me into the community of brotherhood they had forged, and I was now visiting the place where so much of the...WTOP Book Report: She was a Calif. soccer mom hiding a secret.
