By HYUNG-JIN KIM (Associated Press)SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said its attempt to put the country’s first spy satellite into orbit failed Wednesday, an apparent embarrassment to leader Kim Jong Un over his push to boost his military capability in the protracted security tensions with the United States and South Korea. The statement published in state media said the rocket carrying the satellite crashed into waters off the Korean Peninsula’s western coast after it lost thrust following the separation of its first and second stages. It said scientists were examining the cause of the failure. The rocket was launched about 6:30 a.m. from the northwestern Tongchang-ri area, where North Korea’s main space launch center is located, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. South Korea’s military said the rocket had “an abnormal flight” before it fell in the waters. It also said it bolstered its military readiness in close...Attorney suspected of Charlestown serial rapes 15 years ago arrested in New Jersey

A New Jersey-based attorney was arrested and charged as being the perpetrator of a series of sexual assaults along the Terminal Street area of Charlestown 15 years ago — and he was found using the same technology that finally identified the Lady of the Dunes last year.Authorities are now asking the public in several states where he has lived to come forward if they can connect him to any other such crimes. Those states include Wisconsin, California, New Jersey and New York.Matthew J. Nilo, 35, was arrested at his home in Weehawken, NJ., at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and charged with three counts of aggravated rape, two counts of kidnapping, one count of assault — attempted rape, and one count of indecent assault and battery.Nilo’s photograph was not provided by authorities. The Boston Police Department; agents and analysts in the FBI’s Boston and Newark, N.J., field offices; and the Hudson County, N.J., Sheriff’s Office were involved in the arrest, according to Boston Polic...Mets Notebook: Buck Showalter dealing with ‘challenge’ of providing playtime at crowded third base

Third base is getting a little crowded. The Mets are currently carrying three third basemen, and while two of the three have roles that don’t always require them to man the hot corner, it’s still a curious predicament that begs some questions about playing time.Brett Bay, Mark Vientos and Eduardo Escobar are all sharing some time at third base. Baty handles the position on most days because the Mets see him as their third baseman of the future. Vientos doesn’t really have a position right now other than a part-time designated hitter, but he did play one game at third over the weekend in Denver against the Colorado Rockies. It was Escobar who was at third base and batting ninth Tuesday when the Mets opened a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field. The Mets have been using Baty, one of the club’s top prospects, against left-handers more often, but with Ranger Suarez on the mound, the Mets turned to Escobar, who is 3-for-5 with a double,...‘A very big wow:’ BPS valedictorians celebrate triumphant graduation after turbulent four years

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Dozens of students at Carlsbad High School staged a walkout Tuesday morning in protest over Carlsbad Unified School District's refusal to fly the Pride flag at its headquarters during Pride month.“I felt that it was an attack to LGBTQ+ students in Carlsbad, and all-around the district, for them to try to push back voting to raise the flag, and they made excuse after excuse saying, 'oh, well, we have to consult with legal team,'" one student told FOX 5.The vote, they say, was announced last-minute and without district-wide input. It comes after controversy erupted last week in the district when a video surfaced of Carlsbad High School Assistant Principal Ethan Williams speaking to members of his church about the district's Strategic Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging plan. NEW YORK (AP) — A third man has been charged in the 2002 shooting death of Run-DMC star Jam Master Jay, prosecutors said Tuesday, marking the latest movement in a case that languished for years.Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York filed a superseding indictment on Tuesday, charging Jay Bryant, 49, in the death of Jason “Jay” Mizell, known professionally as Jam Master Jay. Two other men, Ronald Washington and Karl Jordan Jr., had previously been indicted in August 2020 for the death of Jay. The hip-hop trailblazer was shot in the head in his studio on Oct. 30, 2002. Bryant’s attorney, César de Castro, said in an email that they had just learned of the charges.“Securing an indictment in a secret grand jury, applying an extremely low burden of proof, is one thing. Proving it at trial is another matter,” he said.Bryant, from Queens, was in custody already on unrelated federal drug charges. At the time the other two men were indicted, authorities said Jay’s...US Border Patrol chief is retiring following end of Title 42 restrictions at US-Mexico border
